Had our first baby class... · 2/6/2003

Never seen so many videos of painful births in my life...well, at least not in one sitting. The whole thing reminded me of the beginning of Fight Club where the guy is visiting all the support groups. They even had "guided meditation" after the bloody videos. "Imagine your pain as a white ball of healing light. That's right your pain. The pain itself..." Still, all in all...it was helpful. I look forward to the other classes. My wife said she once again was grateful that I was her husband after seeing some of the other new Dads at this thing. One guy kept going on and on about how their baby better be a boy and how he wasn't gonna sit through any chick flicks. I behaved. I only made one joke throughout the entire class. (I told the teacher that we named the placenta "Bob")

I remember our classes being a mixture of great and pointless. The birth class, breastfeeding class and the infant CPR were the most helpful. The rest were lame. My only complaint about the birth class was in retrospect. The teacher who was a doula was very pro natural birth. No problem so am I. She said the 9 out of 10 births do not need any pain medication (ie Epidural). But she never told us what births DO need them. And as it turned out I DID need one. So I kinda felt ticked at her looking back because she did not prepare us for the 'what ifs' that we should consider an epidural.

Ah well all worked out in the end. :)

I also remember sitting in one of the birth classes I think it was and having my first blood pressure induced light show. When your blood pressure goes up you see these little lights like fire works or fireflies. It really is very cool. I remember just spacing out and going "Whoa..." and Brad asking what was up with me. :)
